We are so appreciative and were overwhelmed by support when we broke ground on Memorial Day, 2025. Little did we know that just over two months later, key parts of our city, including the memorial site, would be devastated by a 500-year flood (see link for drone footage).
The good news is, the materials for the monument, including the many bricks purchased to honor your veterans, were not at the site during the flood and are undamaged. Our use of the site, however, is doubtful. Wauwatosa will likely rebuild Hart Park in a way that mitigates the possibility of damage from a future flood. But the challenges associated with doing so for the memorial make the Hart Park site unlikely.
Our determination to honor our vets, however, remains unshaken. We are working closely with the city to identify other sites for the memorial. While this is a setback, the memorial will be built as soon as possible. As your veterans did, we will adapt and overcome to continue our mission to build the memorial.
If you, or someone you know, would like to make a donation, purchase a brick or sponsor the Memorial, please let us know!
Representatives from VFW Posts 1465, 6498 and 8320 have formed a committee whose goal is to create a local memorial honoring all the men and women who have served in the armed forces. Though the memorial is located in Wauwatosa, we welcome the opportunity to honor ALL those who have served in the US Armed Forces, no matter where they're from.
This Memorial will feature a beautiful stone monument highlighting each of the six branches of the United States military. In addition, a flag court will also showcase the various branches plus the American flag.
Personalized, inscribed bricks purchased by the community to honor family members or friends who have served, plus beautiful landscaping and benches available for relaxation or reflection will complete this design.
We are seeking support to help fund this memorial. The estimated cost of the project is $225,000. The State of WI VFW Foundation will be serving as the repository for donations received and is a 501c3 charitable organization.
